I can't believe it's been already 8 days...

It will last...

Remember that one of my resolutions for this new year was to volunteer? 

Well, I found the opportunity to do it after the tornado hit the city. I never in a million years imagine that I was going to do it in this kind of situation, but my heart feels a lot happier and full of compassion after doing it. 

 

Is it enough?

I don't know, I don't think so. There is so much that needs to be done in the months to come, but it will get better for sure.

Our city has come together in the most amazing way, everybody is helping everybody and I feel in my heart that this disaster has changed the hearts of many people. This good spirit is going to last, it is not going to be temporary.

The last few days I had the honor to volunteer at Holt High School. My cousin  Rita, sent me a text saying that they were in need of a translator, so I headed out that way early Saturday morning only to find total destruction along the way. I could not believe what I was seeing! Houses completely gone, people walking around trying to gather the only belongings left or that they could find, utility crews fixing fallen power lines, police blocking some roads and redirecting traffics, volunteers tents on the side of the road with water for workers and volunteers etc. It was just unbelievable to see that this EF-4 Tornado had come right through my city and caused such an immense damage, many of it unrepairable. 

Driving along that road gave me the chills thinking that it went by so close to our house, goodness, I can barely imagine what would had happened if it had. I fell lucky I guess, but I hurt for those who weren't. 

I also had the opportunity to help our church Holy Spirit Catholic Church. They had were the headquarters for Hispanic victims tornado relief. So my job was to pass along very important information to all those out in the Holt area. Information that would help them out greatly, but sadly, many were very scared thinking that Immigration was going to arrest them and deported. They hid. They would only come out for supplies and disappear again. Hopefully they are fine and went to our church to receive the assistance they needed, I really do.

Please, for the few that read this blog, continue to have every tornado victim in your thoughts and prayers. If you feel like you want to help out somehow, you can always send supplies, donations, donate blood, anything that you would need if you were in the same situation.

Tornado in Tuscaloosa

On Wednesday, April 27, 2011. The southeast of the U.S was heavily affected by a very destructive EF-5 Tornado. The damaged caused has been incalculable. Many are homeless and many without loved ones. That afternoon, we gathered some pillows, blankets, helmets, water and toys for the boys to be distracted with. We got in the hall bathroom of our house and prayed. 

It has been the most nerve wracking event in my life, and even though it was a crisis, I found out that I am a very calm person in situations like this. Today I am more than thankful to be alive along with my loved ones. These past days have been very very emotional for me, and my heart aches, while I realize how close this tornado got to us and by all the destruction.

Please pray for all the ones that are displaced and for all the ones that have lost somebody. You can rebuild a home and a business but you can't get a lost life back.
